Francois Nicholas Voirin – the modern Tourte 1833-1885 (sold)

One of the top ten bow makers of all time it takes an extraordinary man to pursue an altogether new design of bow rather than slavishly copy the great Dominique Peccatte.

I have three very different Voirin bows in stock for violinist to try, One is available through my new rental scheme (email for details). Varying from 58g to an incredibly rare 62g. Indeed Mischa Elman played on a heavy Voirin as did Menuhin in his early career.

François Nicolas Voirin

You may be wondering why I have written ‘the modern Tourte’, this is because during his lifetime he was considered the most beguiling of makers.

There is something a little magical about his bows, partly due to fact that he places the weight nearer the hand of the player thus making control more straightforward. His ability to plane a stick is second to none and his octagonal bows are utterly unique in their delicacy.

The bow show here is a wonderful circa 1865 59g Voirin for sale.
