Andre Richaume circa 1935
How wonderful to be able to offer an undamaged bow by this great maker. Indeed over the years I have been fortunate to offer a steady number of this maker's bows to the discerning violinist.
This bow dates from about 1932 towards the end of his five year spell of working in his uncle Victor Fetique's shop in Paris. In 1932 Richaume set up his own shop at 60 Boulevard de Clichy, from this period he made several unstamped bows to send to the Fetique shop since Fetique was ill and in need of stock to sell, Fetique passed away in 1933. That being said it is clearly the work of Richaume and comes with a certificate issued by Jean-Francois Raffin. 62 grammes
As with all his bows his choice of wood is top class, a bow to really cherish at a reasonable price. From a playing point of view it is wonderfully balance throughout the entire length of the bow with a bright articulation within a pleasant softness on the string.
It is quite difficult to find bows from this era as Richaume spent a great deal of time studying older great bows that came into the Fetique shop for restoration. The majority of his sticks are light brown, only occasionally are the darker red-brown bows to be found like this one. Sold with a certificate from Jean-Francois Raffin. Many great violinists have derived great satisfaction playing on his bows, most notably David Oistrakh from 1958 till his death in 1974.
