Dominique Peccatte circa 1860
Here is a delightful bow by the greatest bow maker of all time bar none! Made circa 1860 it almost immediately suffered a break under the lapping, this occurred within the first twenty years as it has been repaired in the Vuillaume workshop by none other than the redoubtable Francois Viorin as his Vuillaume style frog and button are resplendent on the stick. The repair can be seen below and is utterly secure being a long scarf repair secured by two pernambuco plugs.
Weighing 58g it is a delight to use, especially when playing in testing circumstances as it is just a joy to use as it does everything you ask of it. Although it is tempting to replace the Voirin fittings with modern replica Peccatte fittings it is an interesting historical bow exactly as it is. It is clear J. B. Vuillaume asked his bow workshop foreman Voirin to repair this bow and it is an extremely rare Peccatte with Vuillaume style fittings.
I have always greatly enjoyed playing bows set up in this style whether Viorin or Pierre Simon, they have remained my favourite bows of choice, so a Dominique Peccatte mounted thus is a rare and wonderful bow indeed. Note the distinctive 'S' shape along the front ridge of the head, a particular facet of this maker amongst several other traits that you expect to see in the output from this, the most desirable of makers. It comes with a certificate from Jean-Francois Raffin.
