James Tubbs c. 1905
Here is a superb late Tubbs bow with some wear and a repaired head, some minimal damage to the frog and a later button! Sounds awful in ways, that is until you put the bow onto the string, then suddenly you realise you are in the presence of a first class soloists bow.
In a recent visit to see Jean-Francois Raffin in Paris I was interested to see on the wall of his shop a few photos of great French bows and bow makers, in the middle of all these was a photo of James Tubbs, high praise indeed. This bow is a real bonus to any player, it irons out difficult passages and give a luminous warm, enticing sound. Also because of its condition it is reasonably priced.
Original beautiful whalebone lapping.
His customary lovely silver face.
Note wear on handle, totally understandable, it was used with a Giuseppe Gagliano professionally for forty odd years.
Note slight damage to frog, all original ebony this can be dressed put and become invisible.
Note the clavette repair to the head, difficult to see and totally secure.
A bow full of zest and character just waiting for a new owner to cherish it.
Fabulous pernambuco under strong light it has a fabulous understated figure throughout the stick.
Peter Hembrough bows has a history of bringing first class Tubbs bows to the notice of series violinists on a budget looking for an affordable classic bow. Stamped ‘Jas Tubbs’ it is from his last period when he had abandoned the earlier whippy type of bow.
