Joseph Rene Lafleur c. 1830

In the late 1820’s Francois Lupot II was becoming extremely popular, he decided to employ a certain young Joseph Lafleur, a superb young maker. Lupot became aware of the young maker when visiting his father to sell pernambuco to him in the previous decade. This bow, original in every single area, is stamped twice Lupot using his second stamp, this stamp came into use in the late 1820’s. It also has one of the first original bottom plate to be seen on any bow, secured by two, now rusty screws. It is commonly asserted that Lupot was the innovator of this addition, my personal feeling, seeing just how creative Lafleur was, is that he probably came up with the idea in Lupot’s workshop.

Lafleur was himself a fine violinist and so was well aware of what players needs, he also without exception used only the finest wood, often of a dark red brown type with black veins running through, this is one of these bows. This maker really can outshine nearly all other makers. I remember some years ago receiving both a Lafleur and a Peccatte at the same time, warming up for a concert on London’s south bank it was clear the Lafleur was a better bow, no contest! That bow sold within two days to a quartet player in northern Spain.

Playing characteristics

When in use this bow has a directness that is pleasing during performance, it is a strong yet malleable stick capable of all desired bow strokes with his unique and glowing sound under the ear.

Condition

As stated above this bow is original in all areas, the head has a clavette, now this maker often inserted these to add strength so it is not really possible to say wether this is an original or a later addition. The head has suffered a break but this is of no concern the repair is strong and totally secure. A rare bow, totally original and in stunning condition, truly a soloists dream bow. The pernambuco is of the highest quality, this is common for this inspirational maker, in my view easily within the top ten makers that ever lived.

Certificate

This bow has a recent certificate from Jean-Francois Raffin.
