A rare sight - two modele experimental Jean Jacques Millant bows

Jean Jacques Millant bows are highly desirable on the international market, his prices are very strong indeed.

From 1960-1970 he made his systeme brevete modele experimental bows, quickly bought by top performers (the octagonal one on this page was owned by Michael Rabin and sold through Peter Hembrough Bows some years ago) and shrewd collectors as it was known his output was slow and carefully judged.

Little is written about him and so early in the new year I will publish an article about this great maker drawing on reminiscences from colleagues who met and knew him.

Musafia case - £850

Mint condition Lifton Alligator skin double violin case arrives from Quebec

Peter Hembrough Bows have a small selection of retro cases as well as new Musafia cases. Made in 1940 a Lifton violin case with Alligator exterior was a sign as a New York violinist that you had made it. Complete with French gold fittings and a plush burgundy interior it really is a superb case for the voilinist in need of taking two violins to work.

Persoit the magician

Here is an extremely rare and wonderful object. Dating from around 1810 this is an open trench frog from one of the Persoit bows on sale. Given that when it first arrived it was covered in mildew I am often amazed at how clean these parts can become through gentle cleaning.

Sartory cello bow pays a quick visit

Made from his best deep red pernambuco and from perhaps his best period of circa 1914, this bow was destined to not stay in the collection for too long. In the event it managed to stay for four days before an international chamber musician based in Spain bought the bow.

Increasingly difficult to source Peter Hembrough Bows pride themselves on being able to find the most desirable bows at the most competitive prices.  A lucky new owner.

Stunning Nicolas Remy Maire circa 1855 arrives from Japan

A bow fit for the finest soloist has arrived from one of the foremost Japanese dealers. In wonderful condition save a small repair near a knot in the wood, this bow is about as good as bows get.

I am, needless to say, not in a hurry to sell but it shall eventually need a new home. Look carefully through stock to find a real bargain in my spring sale. The playing capabilities of this bow are tremendous.

Francois Xavier Tourte leaves for Tokyo

It was always going to happen!  Being such a rare and early example I knew that I would not own this bow for long.  I wish it a happy new life in Japan where I hope it will play on a fine Cremonese instrument.

As you can see from this picture the bow has a tremendous line and style, oozing class.

Of course it was a joy to play on, utterly unique in feel it allowed you to phrase at ease with wonderful nuance.  From circa 1790 it is testament to the brilliance of these great Parisienne makers.

Regular visitors to this site shall be pleased to know that there are two wonderful bows soon to be offered for sale.  A wonderful circa 1850 Pierre Simon and an extremely rare Persoit.

Stradivari and Guarneri - two wonderful characters

As a professional violinist,  it is difficult to explain why playing instruments by these two makers is so wonderful. I would imagine part of the wonder is the way they suggest a way of coaxing the best out of you.

The Stradivari dates from 1696 and the Guarneri from 1704, truly remarkable in construction, they are stunning both visually and from an aural standpoint utterly beguiling. Married to a first class French bow, the player is set free to a remarkable degree.

Superb Dominique Peccatte replica arrives!

Peter Hembrough Bows are truly delighted to be able to offer first class replica bows by the UK’s leading bow maker Michael Taylor.

Having some original Peccatte bows for sale and also regularly handling and selling such bows I can personally assure players that these bows are about as close as you can get to the unique feeling of a Peccatte for a reasonable price. Made from pernambuco of a very high standard they are a delight to play and highly addictive!

They are limited in supply so don’t take your time should you be interested. If you prefer the idea of a Francois Xavier Tourte model then two are arriving by late October.

As the sole U.K. supplier of Michael Taylor bows all your needs can be arranged through this company.

Costing just £20 each surely your prized possessing deserves a little added security. Sadly they don’t all come with a Dominique Peccatte bow like the one above, but that can be arranged through Peter Hembrough Bows!
