This bow is later than the others in the collection and is a feast for the eye. As the great English bow maker William C Retford put it so succinctly
The Sartory is the outstanding bow among the successors to Voirin
At this point in his career he was still making mostly round sticks but when the fancy took him he would make a fabulous octagonal one like this. Sartory was very confident of his abilities. After studying with his father, Charles Peccatte and Alfred Lamy pere he set up in Paris on his own, aged eighteen, at 12 Boulevard Bonne Nouvelle.
Characteristics
You get the sense that you have something in reserve when using this bow. The balance Sartory creates is wonderful to behold, especially so in this case. I have found that throughout concerts I am having a dialogue with my bow arm and I am constantly delighted with the possibilities this bow suggests in a concert environment. Truly a master bow with just a hint of a swagger!
Condition
This bow has been pinned (you cant see the pins) so whilst this affects the price the bow plays just as before. In fact when a player recently borrowed this bow in rehearsals colleagues told her that she was incorrect and that the bow was not pinned so successful is the repair! The rest of the bow is in beautiful condition with minimal wear. The heel is a very good example of this maker's work and of the best Mauritius ebony.
